Charence Higgins Elected Miss JSU

Charence Monique Higgins, 20, the daughter of John and Daphne Higgins of Madison, was recently elected as Miss Jackson State University 2015 - 2016 by her peers at the university. The senior at Jackson State University is a 3.9 GPA scholar who is pursuing dual-degrees in psychology and speech communications with an emphasis in theatre. "Winning the election feels surreal," Higgins told JSU's school newspaper. "It's incredible and something I dreamt about since I was a freshman." While at Jackson State University, Charence has also earned the title of Miss Pre-Alumni (2014 -2015), Miss Mississippi Black and Gold of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (2015), Junior Class Senator, and Miss MADDRAMMA (2013 - 2014). She is continuing her academic success at JSU as a W.E.B. DuBois Honors College student with plans of graduating in May 2016. Her other college credits include Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges, National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts All-Star Cast Member, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society, and many more. A 2012 graduate of Madison Central High School, Higgins had the distinction of being named a National Merit Scholar, was in the top 10% of her graduating class, an active participant in Reveille Show Choir, and was featured in Portico Magazine as one of the Top 25 Students Who Will Change the World. However, she has stated that her proudest accomplishment is the distinction she received for completing grades K - 12 with Perfect Attendance. Along with receiving numerous scholarships and awards, Charence is an acclaimed actress, singer, model, dancer, motivational speaker, and scholar who is very active in her church, College Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She is a member of the College Ministry, sings in two choirs, is an usher and fulfills many other duties. Charence's only sibling, John Higgins II, is currently a sophomore at JSU. The newly elected Miss Jackson State University has a long legacy with the university. Her parents, paternal grandparents, paternal great-grandmother, and seven of her maternal aunts and uncles are all JSU alumni.
